Paint drifts on to cars parked in Ducworks parking lot

Specks of paint from the Ducworks steel fabricating company in Logan are drifting onto employees’ cars and causing complaints.
“Some projects we do require us to paint steel,” said Geoff Andrews, an accounts manager for Ducworks. “The company has painting chambers but sometimes the steel is too big, so we have to do it outside.”
When painting outside, the wind can carry paint particles over to the employee’s parked cars, leaving spots on the vehicles’ exterior.
“People complained to management,” said Andrews. “But they didn’t do anything about it for a while.”
Andrews said that finally on Aug. 16, the company told its employees that it would cover the damages as long as they submitted a complaint within seven days. If cars got paint on them after Aug. 23 or the complaint deadline was missed, the company would do nothing.
Andrews bought a 2014 Toyota Corolla after the Aug. 23 deadline. Soon after, specks of paint dotted his car as well. However, since it happened after the deadline, the company told him it would not cover the expense of removing the paint.
“They told me to buy a car cover,” he said.”Or park somewhere else.”
Ducworks managers refused to comment for this story.
Andrews said a similar incident occured 3 years ago when wind carried paint from Ducworks to a neighboring company, Badger Screen Printing, leaving paint not only on employees’ cars, but the building itself. Ducworks paid for damages then, but did little to prevent future problems.
Andrews does not park at Ducworks anymore.
“I park in the Maple Valley parking lot,” he said. “Then I jump the fence, cross the train tracks, hop a ditch, cross the street then cross another business’ parking lot to get to work.”
