Construction for a 13,000 square foot welcome center is underway on the Utah State University campus. The new building, scheduled for completion in the spring of 2016 and funded by USU Credit Union, is being built where the school’s now-demolished Art Barn used to be.
The university has leased the ground to the credit union, which will fund and carry out the entire project.
Robert Behunin, the vice president of the USU Advancement and Commercialization department, said the main purpose of the building is the welcome center.
“There’s no single place on campus where a person can come in and get an idea of what the university is about,” he said. “USU Credit Union saw that need and offered to build us one.”
The Credit Union will own the building, but 85 percent of it will be used by the school, Behunin said. A small Credit Union Branch will be on the first floor.
The lease will last 40 years with two possible five year extensions, after which the building will become the property of the university.
The welcome center will be on the first floor of the building. It will include a conference room to host external groups, as well as interactive video board consoles which will provide information about the university. The center will also feature a small banquet hall and an atrium. Student interns will be available to help visitors.
“There will be four elements to the building,” said Lorin Mortensen, the senior mechanical engineer for USU facilities. “A USU Credit Union, a university welcome center, an alumni office, and the offices for the school’s Advancement and Commercialization Department.”
USU Credit Union was started in 1957 at Utah State by two economics professors. All business was originally conducted in the Old Main building, but as the business grew, the company moved off campus.
“Now we’re bringing it back to campus,” Behunin said. “It’s kind of a nice homecoming. And it’s a really tremendous gift they’re giving us.”
